Paynesville upsets Starbuck in amateur baseball playoffs

STARBUCK -- Paynesville scored three runs in four different innings en route to upsetting Cornbelt North League champion Starbuck 13-8 in the first game of the double-elimination playoffs Sunday.

Paynesville will now play at Norway Lake-Sunburg, an 8-6 winner over New London-Spicer, next Sunday in the winner's bracket. Starbuck will host New London-Spicer next Sunday, with the loser eliminated.

Paynesville stroked 16 hits, including Adam Miller's three-run home run, to improve to 5-11.

Jamie Paul had three hits for the Pirates. Miller, Trent Hanson, Aaron Beyer, Shannon Olmscheid, Ryan Hess and Jordan Hess had two hits each.

Ryan Hess hurled the first five innings for the win, weathering 12 hits and allowing eight runs. Paul pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the save. He gave up three hits.

Zach Lagred and Mike Andreas had three hits each for Starbuck (11-9). Andreas had a triple and drove in three runs. Joe Heidelberger was tagged with the loss.

Raymond won the league title with a 13-2 record, followed by Bird Island at 10-5. Willmar and Atwater at 8-7 each, and Granite Falls and Sacred Heart each 4-11.

In double-elimination league playoffs on Wednesday, Raymond hosts Sacred Heart, Bird Island hosts Granite Falls and Atwater hosts Willmar.
