GLENWOOD -- Authorities refused to release the name Tuesday of a 10-year-old Willmar girl who was severely injured Monday afternoon along the shore of Lake Minnewaska.
Glenwood Police Chief David Thompson said Tuesday he was honoring the family's request to not publically release the girl's name.
The 10-year-old was injured after a large slab of ice along the shore of the lake fell on top of the girl, pinning her underneath. She was initially taken to Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood and later airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
The Star Tribune reported the girl was in serious condition as of Tuesday morning. The girl's condition was unknown as of Tuesday night.
Thompson said the girl was playing along the shoreline with her family close by when she was pinned under the ice. The chunk of ice that pinned the girl was estimated to be a 5- by 6-foot section of ice between 8 and 10 inches thick. Thompson estimated the weight of the ice slab was more than 200 pounds.

Bystanders were able to remove the chunk of ice from on top of the girl before authorities arrived. The ice was part of an ice heave around the lake, but Thompson was unsure exactly what caused the ice to fall on the girl.
"Ice is unpredictable," he warned.
The Pope County Sheriff's Office, Glacial Ridge Ambulance, Glenwood Fire Department and Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.
