NEW LONDON -- Interest in the deer hunt offered by the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center for people with disabilities is continuing to grow.
All seven of the available blinds have already been spoken for, according to Mark Mertens, who organizes the hunt.
This will mark the fifth annual firearms deer hunt for people with disabilities at Prairie Woods.
It will be held during the second weekend of the regular firearms season, Nov. 11-14. Volunteers helped construct a new blind to make it possible for Prairie Woods to host seven hunters this year.
Persons interested in participating in next year's hunt should to call the Prairie Woods office at 320-354-5894.

Mertens said that due to the growing interest, Prairie Woods may look at using a lottery system for next year. It is also considering the possibility of offering the hunt during both weekends of the firearm season.
It may also be possible to add an eighth blind, but that is probably the maximum number for the site, according to Mertens.
To expand the hunting opportunities, Prairie Woods will need more volunteers to help out on the hunting weekend. Donations of materials or money for the construction of blinds are also needed, said Mertens.
Along with providing hunting opportunities, the hunt helps Prairie Woods properly manage the deer herd.
