WILLMAR -- A 26-year-old Willmar woman made her first appearance Thursday in Kandiyohi County District Court on felony assault charges for allegedly hitting a woman in the head with a baseball bat.
Candice Marie Mack is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and third-degree assault for causing substantial bodily harm. According to court documents, she was six months pregnant at the time of the assault on March 29 at a house party in Willmar.
Unconditional bail was set at $15,000 bond or $1,600 cash by Judge David L. Mennis. Conditional release was allowed on her personal recognizance, provided Mack have no contact with two women involved in the incident. Her next appearance is June 9.
According to the complaint, a Willmar Police officer was called to the emergency room of Rice Memorial Hospital on March 29 to investigate an assault. Two women were there, and one was being treated by staff for a head wound.
The women said they had been at a party and that a woman there had accused the injured woman of being a "narc", punched her in the face and hit her in the back of the head with a baseball bat. The other woman said she witnessed the assault and gave the officer a photo of the woman who she said committed the assault.

The officer observed the woman's head wound, which was several inches long and required staples to close. She also had swelling on her face.
The investigation revealed that Mack matched the photo and description given by the woman. The witness picked Mack from a six-person photo lineup on April 11. The next day, Mack told the officer she had heard about the incident, but that she was at home caring for her children that night. Police contacted the father of the children, who has sole custody, and determined that Mack did not have any visitation with the children in the month of March.
