Prep Softball: Benson/Hancock, YME advance in 3AA-North

Benson/Hancock and Yellow Medicine East each won twice on the first day of the Section 3AA-North softball playoffs on Tuesday. On Saturday in Marshall in the winner's bracket, Benson/Hancock meets New Ulm at 2 p.m. and YME plays Luverne at 2 p.m....

Benson/Hancock and Yellow Medicine East each won twice on the first day of the Section 3AA-North softball playoffs on Tuesday.

On Saturday in Marshall in the winner's bracket, Benson/Hancock meets New Ulm at 2 p.m. and YME plays Luverne at 2 p.m. The winners play at 5 p.m.

First round

YME 9, NL-Spicer 3

(At Redwood Falls) -- Whitney Swenson put YME ahead 5-3 in the third inning with a two-run single. She also drove in a run with a triple and Cassie Cole collected three hits to help the Sting outhit NLS 14-7.

Jenna Moritz hit an inside-the-park home run in the first for the Wildcats.

(At Benson) -- Emily Rajewsky hit a three-run home run to right field in the third inning give Benson/Hancock an 8-0 lead.

LQPV closed the gap in the fifth with three runs for an 8-4 score, but the Brave/Owls tacked on three more runs in the next two innings to secure the win.

Keri Mikkelson had two hits and three RBI for the Brave/Owls. Debbie Reardon added two hits and three runs scored.
