The fall election season swings into high gear in Minnesota with the state primary Tuesday.
The primary will narrow the field of candidates in many races across the state. Candidates chosen in the primary will be on the ballot for the Nov. 4 general election.
On the ballot are races for U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Minnesota House of Representatives. Many areas also have county board and city council elections.
In races where candidates declare a political party, voters must choose one party and vote only on the races in that party's primary. In non-partisan races, voters narrow the number of candidates who will be on the fall ballot.
Notable primaries in west central Minnesota include one for Ward 2 on the Willmar City Council, District 2 on the Kandiyohi County Board and District 5 on the Renville County Board. In each case, a larger field will be narrowed to two candidates for the general election.

Voters in the Renville County West School District will decide on a $19.46 million bond issue to build a new K-12 school building.
Polls in most precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In some rural townships, voting begins at 10 a.m.
Voters who do not know where to vote may call their county auditor's office or use a locater service on the Web site of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
Voters can find the addresses to their polling places and even print maps to help them find the locations.
Voters may register on the day of the primary with proper identification and proof of residence. More information about the process is available on the secretary of state's Web site.
