GOP's lust for power, money
The Catholic bishops couldn't bring themselves to use their authority to put a stop to the sexual abuse of children by their priests. They knew exposure of the scandal would seriously diminish the flow of money into the church.
The Republican bishops; Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House; Rep. John Boehner, majority leader; John Shimkus, chairman of the House Page Board; and Tom Reynolds, campaign chairman, couldn't bring themselves to expose the sexual abuse of House pages. These leaders of the "party of family values" knew it would seriously interfere with holding the majority in Congress in the next election.
In neither case were the victims ever considered -- not before, during or after the abuse.
