RCW discusses idea of holding levy referendum in fall

RENVILLE -- The Renville County West School Board discussed holding a levy referendum this fall but delayed making a decision at its meeting on Monday.

RENVILLE -- The Renville County West School Board discussed holding a levy referendum this fall but delayed making a decision at its meeting on Monday.

The board's finance committee will meet before the Sept. 11 meeting to discuss the issue, Interim Superintendent John Widvey said Tuesday in a telephone interview.

"That decision has not been made," he said, but the board will decide whether to hold a levy referendum on Sept. 11 after hearing its committee's recommendation.

For the past few years, the district has had an operating deficit that is larger than the state allows.

However, a preliminary report from the district's auditor shows that the district "has made some positive progress" in getting out of debt, Widvey said.

In a board retreat Monday afternoon, board members discussed goals for the board and for the district, Widvey said. They will review their list of goals from Monday's retreat at a future meeting before approving a final version.

The board discussed its current natural gas contract with Cornerstone Energy and asked Widvey to research the potential savings with different providers.

Representatives of the Renville Community Foundation talked with the board about community improvement projects, including a possible collaboration on a skateboard park on school property near the community swimming pool.
