According to information from the state Department of Public Safety, five of 19 traffic deaths and 15 of 57 serious injuries were related to alcohol use from Dec. 23 through Jan. 2 a year ago. During that time, 955 drivers were arrested for DWI.

The state has tracked alcohol-related crashes since 1984. The state's 177 alcohol-related traffic deaths was the lowest since tracking began.

In 2004, more than 34,000 motorists were arrested for DWI. One in nine Minnesotans with a driving record has a DWI, a total of more than 447,000 people.

The crime can cost up to $20,000, including increased insurance costs, driver's license reinstatement fees and other fines.

The Safe and Sober campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is designed to reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.

Prinsburg Fire Chief Bob Sportel said that he thinks the fire started in the basement, but the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters from Prinsburg, Raymond and Blomkest fought the fire until 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire rekindled at 5:30 a.m. and they fought that fire until 8:30 a.m. Friday.

The fire was fought with water tankers that were filled in Prinsburg.

Weather conditions, with blowing snow and freezing temperatures made fighting the fire more difficult than usual, Sportel said.

The home is owned by James and Linda Hocum.

No injuries were reported.
