- Yoselin Jimenez-Soriano, 25, of Murdock was arraigned Thursday on one felony count of check forgery - making or altering a check.

Judge Donald Spilseth released Jimenez-Soriano on her own personal recognizance.

According to the criminal complaint, the Willmar Police Department received a report from a relative of Jimenez-Soriano about three checks in their account with forged signatures. The relative reported they received a notice from Heritage Bank indicating insufficient funds for three checks worth a total of $610.14.

The relative said they did not sign those checks or give permission to anyone to sign for those checks. The relative, assuming Jimenez-Soriano was the alleged culprit, said she had done this in the past. According to Tribune archives, Jimenez-Soriano was convicted in February 2006 for issuing a dishonored check in December 2004.

On Sept. 29, the Willmar Police Department questioned Jimenez-Soriano and she admitted to taking the checks out of a checkbook from the relative's home and to forging the signatures on the three checks. Jimenez-Soriano said she was "hurting for money and needed a few things."

Jimenez-Soriano's next appearance is March 3.

- Jamie Lee Gustafson, 28, of Atwater was arraigned Thursday on a felony count of issuing a dishonored check and a gross misdemeanor count of theft by swindle.

Judge Donald Spilseth released Gustafson on her own personal recognizance.

According to the complaint, Gustafson went to Mills Ford/Jeep in Willmar Nov. 5 to purchase a vehicle. Gustafson told a salesman she had $1,000 to spend and he helped her find a 1996 Mazda MPV. The dealership manager said Gustafson paid $1,000 for the vehicle in a "straight up cash deal" transaction. Gustafson paid for the vehicle with a check worth $1,000.

Following the sale, the dealership received a notice indicating the check from Gustafson had insufficient funds. The dealership on Nov. 27 sent a demand for payment. Gustafson received and signed for the notice Dec. 11 but did not pay within five business days.

According to Kandiyohi County law enforcement, the checking account used by Gustafson was opened Oct. 1 and went into a negative balance on Oct. 15. From Oct. 15-30, the account accumulated a negative balance of $815.91, and therefore had insufficient funds prior to the vehicle purchase. The account was closed Dec. 14.

Gustafson's next appearance is March 3.
