Fire call

RAYMOND -- The Raymond Fire Department was called to the Minnesota Valley Alfalfa Producers plant shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday after some alfalfa bales caught fire behind the plant.

The fire was close to the plant on a windy day, so firefighters doused the bales with water, said Raymond Fire Chief Ardell Tensen. The field next to the plant had already been harvested, which reduced the chances of it spreading beyond the plant area, he said.

Extra water tankers were paged from the Prinsburg and Pennock departments, Tensen said.

Firefighters were called back shortly after midnight, when the wind shifted and the still-smoldering bales became a concern again.

Aside from the burned bales, there was no other damage, and no one was injured, Tensen said.
