Accidents

ATWATER -- A semi and a car collided Wednesday afternoon six miles north of Atwater, sending two people to Rice Memorial Hospital with injuries.

The accident happened at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Kandiyohi County Roads 2 and 28.

According to the Sheriff's Department, Jerry Kelly, 65, of New London, was driving a semi south on County Road 2 when it collided with a vehicle driven by Greg Storlien, 38, of Becker, who was going east on County Road 28.

Both individuals were taken to Rice with unknown injuries.

Besides the Sheriff's Department, the Atwater Fire Department, Atwater Ambulance, Willmar Ambulance and State Patrol assisted with the accident.

WILLMAR -- Two people were injured Tuesday in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Kandiyohi County Road 5 and state Highway 40.

The incident happened at 12:59 p.m.

According to the State Patrol, a vehicle driven by Cynthia Maria Johnson, 55, of Montevideo, was going south on County Road 5 and attempting to cross Highway 40 when it collided with a vehicle driven by Sharon Jean Sommers, 70, of Willmar.

Johnson's vehicle spun and overturned.

In the process, a vehicle driven by Jared Riley Onnen, 18, of Raymond, was also struck. Onnen was stopped at a stop sign when his vehicle was struck.

Sommers and Johnson were taken to Rice Memorial Hospital and treated and released for injuries.

Everyone involved was wearing seat belts.

Runaway child

WILLMAR -- A toddler narrowly escaped injury Tuesday when it got away from his mother and crossed a busy street. According to the initial report, an individual reported seeing a small boy with a pacifier in his mouth cross the road by Lakeland Estates and nearly get struck by a vehicle.

Police were unable to find the child, but a woman later called to say she'd found her son. She said there was a problem with the lock on the door of her home, and the child had gotten out. She said the lock was being fixed.

Theft

WILLMAR -- A digital music player was reported stolen from the Willmar High School at 2:17 p.m. on Tuesday.

Kandiyohi County

- Mahmoud Ameen Abdul Shareef, 30, of Kandiyohi was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison on a weapons charge and for using a stolen credit card.

Judge Michael Thompson sentenced Shareef to 60 months in prison with credit given for time served.

Shareef pleaded guilty to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a March 12 incident at the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services Building. He was arrested there for a warrant from Ramsey County when it was discovered he had a .177-caliber BB gun tucked in his belt. No weapons are allowed in that facility and Shareef had prior felony convictions in 1997 and 2005.

He also pleaded guilty to a charge of financial transaction card fraud in connection with a Dec. 10 incident when he stole a purse from a restaurant where he was employed and he and two other individuals made multiple purchases in Willmar with credit cards in the purse.

Three other charges were dismissed in that case.

He was sentenced to 17 months in prison for that case.

The prison sentences will be served concurrently. He was also ordered to pay fines and fees of $140 and restitution of $1,550.72.

- Ben Frank Christianson, 30, of Spicer, was sentenced Tuesday to two years of supervised probation and given a 30-day stayed jail sentence for a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A drug-related charge and another weapons charge were dismissed.

During execution of a search warrant Sept. 25 at his home, drugs and drug paraphernalia were discovered, along with a Winchester 20-gauge youth model shotgun and a black powder rifle.

According to the complaint, Christianson said he'd received the gun as a child and he was letting his girlfriend's son use it.

He was also ordered to pay fines and fees of $590.
