* John Paul Negen, 22, of Montevideo, was arraigned on Thursday on felony charges of controlled substance in the fifth degree, possessing a firearm when not allowed to do so, speeding and no seat belt.
The defendant was released on his personal recognizance with conditions requiring he submit to random drug tests and not possess firearms. Unconditional bail was set at $20,000.
The complaint charges that a Minnesota State Patrol officer seized marijuana, a shotgun and a large amount of cash from the defendant after stopping him for speeding at 2:23 a.m. Oct. 30 on Highway 23 near 132nd Street Northeast in Kandiyohi. The complaint states that 58 grams of marijuana and $10,243.82 in cash were in a bag in the defendant's white Cadillac and that he had $641.09 in cash on his person when stopped. The officer also seized a Remington 12-gauge shotgun from the car.

The officer was suspicious due to the defendant's disheveled appearance when stopped, and signs that the seals on a deflated airbag and other parts of the instrument panel and dash had been previously opened and reclosed, the complaint states. The officer also believed he could detect the smell of marijuana, the complaint states.
* Juan Alvarez Sanchez, 28, of Willmar, was arraigned Thursday on charges of terroristic threats, domestic assault with strangulation, domestic assault and also assault in the fifth degree.
The court set unconditional bail at $20,000 and conditional bail at $10,000.
The complaint states that Willmar police officers responded to a report that a 26-year-old female had been assaulted Oct. 30 at Regency Estates West. The complaint states that the defendant struck the victim, kicked her in the stomach with his knee and grabbed her by the neck in an assault.
* Steven Allan Strand, 48, of Belgrade, was sentenced Friday to the Commissioner of Corrections for one year and one day and sentenced to serve five years of probation for a felony conviction on controlled substance in the fifth degree.
The court ordered that two-thirds of the time be served in jail and one-third of the time as supervised release. The court provided credit for 114 days served in jail, requiring that the defendant serve the remaining 180 days in jail. Strand must also pay $710 in fines and fees.
Strand was arrested after being stopped July 12 by a Minnesota State Patrol officer on U.S. Highway 71 north of Minnesota Highway 9. A search of his vehicle found a bag containing 0.02 gram of methamphetamine and an open bottle of alcohol, the complaint states.

WILLMAR -- Police officers took a man into custody for allegedly assaulting a woman Friday at a residence on the 13000 block of 24th Street Northwest. Police were called to the apartment at 2:29 a.m. after a report of a domestic assault. The 20-year-old male suspect allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old female.
