District Court
Kandiyohi County
* Nicholas Austin Sorenson, 20, of Willmar was sentenced Thursday to 45 days in jail, five years of probation and a $1,000 fine on a felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance.
He was given credit for 13 days of jail already served and ordered to complete a chemical dependency evaluation and make progress to obtain his GED.
Judge Donald M. Spilseth ordered that adjudication be withheld, meaning that if Sorenson meets the court's conditions, the conviction will not appear on his record.

As part of a plea agreement, a gross misdemeanor charge for failing to transfer the registration on a motor vehicle was dismissed.
The charges were filed after a Willmar police officer on patrol on June 18 observed a vehicle turning left onto Becker Avenue from Third Street. The car had no front license plate, a very loud muffler, illegal dark windows and was traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer recognized the driver as Sorenson, from previous contacts, and stopped the vehicle. The officer observed the strong order of marijuana when Sorenson, who had bloodshot and watery eyes, rolled down the window.
During a search of the vehicle, the officer found two bags of a leafy green substance, which tested positive as marijuana and weighed 86 grams.
The same officer had stopped Sorenson on June 11, at which time he advised him to get the vehicle title transferred to his name, as he claimed to own the vehicle. The second license plate for the car was found in the trunk.
