Fire departments respond to Hawick fire
HAWICK - Firefighters from New London, Spicer and Paynesville fire departments assisted Thursday morning in extinguishing a fire near Hawick.
The fire was reported at a private landfill at 6:47 a.m. in the 23400 block of 145th Street Northeast, according to police reports.
One of the employees at the demolition pit reportedly found a hot spot in construction materials.
Firefighters extinguished the fire within an hour, Tim Hanson, assistant New London fire chief, said.
Vehicle tampering, thefts
WILLMAR - A number cases of theft from vehicles were reported Thursday in southeast Willmar.
The first report was made a 10:50 a.m. in the 1000 block of Becker Avenue Southeast. A vehicle in that area had been rummaged through overnight. The door of the vehicle was reportedly unlocked.
Another report was made at 11:04 a.m. in the 1100 block of Elizabeth Avenue Southeast. A pair of expensive sunglasses were stolen from a vehicle in that block.
It was reported at 11:24 a.m. that a wallet containing identification and credit cards was stolen from a vehicle in the 500 block of Julii Street Southeast. A final report of theft of items from a vehicle was made at 1 p.m. Thursday in the 800 block of Fourth Street Southeast.
Criminal damage to property


WILLMAR - It was reported at 2:21 p.m. Wednesday that the windshield of a vehicle had been smashed in the 400 block of 15th Avenue Southwest.

WILLMAR - William Rickey Newman, 36, of Morgan, was sentenced Thursday to 90 days of jail, with credit for all days served, on a misdemeanor charge of fifth-degree assault.
As the result of a plea agreement, an additional felony charge of terroristic threats and a misdemeanor fifth-degree assault charge were dismissed.
According to the criminal complaint on the charges, Newman allegedly assaulted a woman and threatened to kill a man this April in Kandiyohi County.
The man allegedly said Newman swerved his vehicle at him and threatened to kill him.
Newman then allegedly drove to a residence in the area and pushed a woman to the ground and held her by the neck after she told him to leave the property.
