Thomas charged in Willmar robbery

WILLMAR – Darnell Dante Thomas, 31, of Willmar, accused of a robbery armed with a knife last weekend, appeared in court this week and is in custody in the Kandiyohi County Jail.

Thomas faces two felony charges of first-degree aggravated robbery and two felony charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in Kandiyohi County District Court. The release order grants a motion seeking a psychological evaluation to determine if Thomas is competent to stand trial.

Thomas allegedly held a knife against a man’s throat, threatened to kill him and demanded he hand over his valuables. The alleged robbery occurred at Thomas’ apartment in Willmar.

At the time of his arrest, Thomas was out on bail on an earlier charge. He had been arrested in June for assaulting two people with a sword in Willmar.

Gun clip, bullets found

WILLMAR - A gun clip containing six bullets was found lying on a sidewalk Tuesday afternoon in downtown Willmar.

The 9mm clip and ammunition, discovered in the area of Third Street and Becker Avenue Southwest, was turned over to Willmar police and placed in evidence as found property.

Three injured in crash

BELGRADE - Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon north of Elrosa. The crash was reported at 12:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 71 near Stearns County Road 197 in Crow Lake Township.

The Minnesota State Patrol said a 2011 Ford Edge was northbound on Highway 71 and apparently drifted over the center line, colliding with a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado that was southbound in the opposite lane.

The driver of the Ford Edge, Wallace Walter Bastian, 86, of New Ulm, was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries. A passenger in his vehicle, Bonita Louise Bastian, 79, of New Ulm, also was taken to the hospital in St. Cloud for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the Silverado, Daniel Arthur Zins, 52, of Litchfield, was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar with injuries.

All three people were wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not involved.

The State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, Belgrade Fire and Rescue and Glacial Ridge Ambulance.

Renville County motorcyclist hurt in collision with deer

VESTA - A 61-year-old man from Franklin was injured when he struck a deer on his motorcycle at 5:34 a.m. Thursday near Vesta in Redwood County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Paul Dennis Woods was driving a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on state Highway 19 in Vesta Township when he struck a deer, causing him to lay the cycle down.

He was transported by ambulance to Avera Health in Marshall for his injuries.

The Redwood County Sheriff's Office and the Vesta Fire Department and Ambulance responded.

Woods was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
