Two injured in Kandiyohi County crash

KANDIYOHI — Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in rural Kandiyohi.

The incident was reported at 5:20 p.m. on Kandiyohi County Road 26 at the intersection of 71st Street Northeast, in Green Lake Township.

According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, a 2010 Toyota Tundra, driven by Daniel James Nelson, of Kandiyohi, was going east on County Road 26 and was turning left across traffic onto 71st Street when the vehicle collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Robin Ryks of Kandiyohi, that was going west on County Road 26.

According to a news release from Sgt. Todd Neumann, Nelson said he did not see the oncoming car before he made the turn.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Carris Health — Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar where Ryks was treated for serious injuries. Nelson had minor injuries, according to the report.


The case is currently under investigation by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office.

The Carris Health Ambulance, Spicer Fire Department, Spicer First Responders and Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad assisted at the scene.

Sacred Heart man injured in crash with two semis

GRANITE FALLS — A 57-year-old man was injured Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash east of Granite Falls, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

According to the crash report, James Steven Baker, of Sacred Heart, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after his 2012 Chevrolet Silverado hit a 2022 Freightliner semi-tractor, driven by Corey Dwight Wendlandt, 49, of Farmington, on state Highway 23 in Wang Township of Renville County and spun out, hitting another semitractor, driven by Lafayette E. Ward, 56, of Chicago Heights, Illinois.

Baker and Wendlandt were both northbound on Highway 23, and Ward was southbound.

Baker was transported to Avera Granite Falls Health Center.

Neither Wendlandt nor Ward had injuries listed on the crash report.

All drivers were wearing their seat belts and none of their airbags deployed.


Alcohol is not involved, according to the State Patrol.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and Granite Falls Police Department, Fire Department and Ambulance responded to the incident, reported at 7:19 a.m. Thursday.


WILLMAR — A 30-year-old man was arrested on drinking and driving-related charges at 11:53 p.m. Thursday on Willmar Avenue and 22nd Street Southwest.

WILLMAR — A 38-year-old man was arrested on warrants at 10:14 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of 13th Street Northwest.

WILLMAR — A 19-year-old man was arrested on drug-related charges at 7:47 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of First Street South.

ATWATER — Three individuals were arrested at 10:18 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Fourth Street North on drug-related charges. Those arrested include a 59-year-old woman, a 58-year-old man and a 40-year-old man. As of Friday afternoon, they were in custody in the Kandiyohi County Jail pending formal charges.

Damaged squad cars

WILLMAR — A Willmar Police Department squad car was damaged at 11:22 p.m. Thursday after being struck by a fire truck that was at the scene of a dumpster fire in the 300 block of Becker Avenue Southwest.

WILLMAR — A crash between a Kandiyohi County squad car and a kitchen staff van was reported at 2:58 p.m. Thursday at the Law Enforcement Center, 2201 23rd St. N.E.



WILLMAR — Police responded to a report that a couple had been scammed out of money. The complaint was filed at 5:42 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of 13th Street Southwest.


WILLMAR — A burglary and the theft of money and a dog were reported at 1:13 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Gorton Avenue Northwest. The report indicates someone entered the home through a window.

WILLMAR — Extra patrol is being requested at all storage units throughout Kandiyohi County following reports of recent break-ins.

RAYMOND — A burglary was reported at 5:23 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 6000 block of 150th Avenue Southwest. A gaming system and a television were reported stolen.
