Renville board discusses new police station

OLIVIA -- Although no official action was taken at Tuesday's Renville County Board of Commissioners meeting, discussion of a potential new Renville Police Station was highlighted.

Renville City Administrator Paul McLaughlin approached the board on behalf of the city to discuss waiving a demolition landfill fee for the removal of a house in Renville.

Renville County Administrator Bill Wells said the city wants to demolish the house as a potential site for a new police station.

"There isn't any formal direction yet," McLaughlin told the West Central Tribune Wednesday.

McLaughlin said the site has been considered for a possible new police station. Discussion about the police station is still in the preliminary stages, he said.

What the site will be used for is still up in the air, but McLaughlin said demolition of the house is a certainty.

As for the waiver, the board does not offer a complete waiver of the fee, but instead presents a substantially lower fee.

Wells said the board's policy in the past has been to offer a fee of around $2.66 per ton of debris.

"Somewhere around $3 a ton," he said after adjusting for inflation.

Wells said the city will have to come back to the County Board if it wants the reduced fee.

The board would have to formally vote on the decision.

Also Tuesday, the board:

- Held preliminary budget hearings for public health, human services, the Sheriff's Department and public works.

- Pulled two items from the special meeting agenda. Approval of the contracts for the jail and human services building project were rescheduled for a special meeting Aug. 11.
