OLIVIA -- Plans are taking shape for a Renville County law enforcement center and jail and offices for the Health and Human Services department.

Project architect Scott Fettig, of Klein-McCarthy Architects in St. Louis Park, updated the Renville County Board of Commissioners on the development of plans for the project at their meeting on Tuesday.

County administrator Bill Wells said that Fettig has held a number of meetings with representatives of both the sheriff's and Health and Human Services departments.

The project remains on track to call for bids and open them yet this year.

The county board would like to see bids opened Dec. 21, for possible awarding in early January.

Plans for the jail are being developed with help from a consultant who previously worked with the Department of Corrections. The county is looking to develop a jail capable of holding 60 beds with double bunking.

The county's law enforcement center will be remodeled as part of the project. The city of Olivia has expressed interest in leasing space in the center for its police department.

The county previously awarded $9.7 million in bonds for the project, and will be using some of its reserve funds as well.

The architect hopes to have more detailed plans ready in a couple of weeks. That will allow for a more accurate estimate of costs, and possible decisions on what to include in the project designs, explained Wells.
