WILLMAR - Campsite reservations at the Kandiyohi County parks open Saturday for 2016, launching a new season for the county park system along with a handful of changes.
Perhaps the most visible change is the renaming of the county’s seven parks. In a decision that received widespread popular support, the County Board of Commissioners decided this year to scrap the number system by which the county parks have long been known and name them after their locations instead: Big Kandiyohi Lake East and West, Diamond Lake, Saulsbury Beach, Green Lake, Lake Carrie and Games Lake.
The new names, which go into effect Jan. 1, are expected to create a stronger identity for each park.
The parks continue to be a popular draw for county residents as well as visitors from outside the area. At a recent park board meeting, Larry Kleindl, county administrator, told the County Commissioners that the camping census has held steady and even increased this past year.
A summer of favorable weather, plus a Fourth of July holiday that fell on the weekend probably helped boost campsite use, Kleindl said.
In view of the demand, a new policy takes effect in 2016, allowing campers to reserve a site in advance for the off season, before the Memorial Day weekend and after Labor Day. Off-season campers who register in advance also will be allowed to rent by the day.
The added flexibility for off-season camping could encourage more park visitors out of season, especially during extended warm spring or fall weather, and bring in additional revenue to support the county park system, Kleindl said.
Fees will increase in 2016 by approximately 2 percent.
This past year the county upgraded the campgrounds at Big Kandiyohi Lake East County Park with water lines and concrete pads. Final paving is scheduled to take place in 2016.
Big Kandiyohi Lake West County Park also is slated for construction of a new handicapped-accessible bathhouse, estimated to cost $390,000.
