WILLMAR -- A new strategic plan for Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar is likely to be crafted into final form in December.

The planning process, which began in September, is continuing to move ahead, Rice CEO Mike Schramm said Wednesday.

The goal was to have a final draft before the end of the year, he said. "We're still on that timeline. ... We're making a lot of progress."

Although the city-owned hospital reviews its strategic direction at least once a year, it has been close to a decade since the plan received a major overhaul. The document, which will address key issues such as demand for services, physician supply and regional demographics, will become Rice's road map for the future.

In upcoming weeks, the hospital's executive team will begin working through an initial draft of the plan, Schramm said.

"We need to refine that and go through it with a fine-tooth comb," he said.

A meeting also will take place soon with medical staff to discuss a medical staff development plan and areas for future growth.

The strategic steering committee is scheduled to meet Nov. 3 and again in December before a final draft is brought to the board of directors.
