GROVE CITY -- Richard Joseph Schmit, 86, of Grove City died Friday at Emmanuel Home in Litchfield.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Litchfield. Military honors will be provided by Admiral Benson VFW Post 2818.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, with a prayer service at 5 p.m., and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born April 1, 1920, in Eden Valley to John and Hildegard (Nistler) Schmit. He grew up in Eden Valley and attended Eden Valley Assumption Parochial School. He helped on the family farm and later owned a filling station. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served during World War II until 1945. He returned to his filling station.
He married Helen Louise Thomsen on Nov. 22, 1949, in Eden Valley. They farmed north of Eden Valley for four years and then bought a farm near Grove City. They farmed there from 1955 to 1970. He also worked for Custom Products and was a jailer for Meeker County from the early 1970s until he retired. He moved to Emmanuel Home in 2004.
He was a member of the Church of St. Philip and was active at the Church of Our Lady for many years. He was a past post commander of the Eden Valley Legion and a member of the Litchfield VFW.
He is survived by his wife; children: Linda (and Dale) of Litchfield, Carol of Litchfield, Jerome (and Cemmy) of Litchfield, James (and Connie) of Litchfield; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Gilbert (and Theresa) Schmit of Bozeman, Mont., Kathleen (and Donald) Nohner of Detroit Lakes and Mildred Garoutte of Ocean Side, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
