WILLMAR – Ridgewater College has added a 16-credit online certificate to its Early Childhood Education Program offerings beginning fall 2016.
The program was developed in response to the demand for qualified staff in childcare centers and family-based childcares. It is available to students 18 and older.
The 16-credit certificate will train students to work at the mid-level teacher’s assistant position.
The program’s community partners and advisory board have been requesting the mid-level certificate curriculum. The certificate has been in the works for six months and was recently approved by the Minnesota State College and Universities system. It will be one of three Early Childhood Education certificates offered and the only one offered online.
The certificate is part of a career ladder for students who want to continue to an associate degree at Ridgewater, Ridgewater instructor Cindy Salfer said in a news release. The Ridgewater AS degree can be advanced to Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall for a bachelor’s degree for those wanting their license to teach prekindergarten through third grade.
Ridgewater expects the demand for graduates in early childhood programs to continue to grow,  said  Mike Boehme, dean of technical programs.
“I’m so excited to see the effect that Ridgewater can have on filling the void that is currently out there in early childhood,” Salfer said. “We want families to have options of care that they know will best meet their needs. By assisting childcare centers and family-based childcares with their training requirements, hopefully those choices will be available.”
The college has three credentials available in its Early Childhood Program: Early Childhood Education AS Degree, Early Childhood Education Online Certificate, Early Childhood Special Education Certificate
