WILLMAR -- Robert "Earl" McLaughlin, 87, of Willmar died Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Presbyterian Church, rural Spicer. Burial will be in Spicer City Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 545 of Spicer.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
He was born June 5, 1920, in Milford, Iowa, to Edward L. and Nora A. (Ankeny) McLaughlin. He grew up in the Milford area and graduated from Okoboji High School in Spirit Lake in 1937. In 1940, his family moved to Poplar.
In 1941, he married Ardith Chapin. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He graduated from officer candidate school as a second lieutenant. In 1943, he went overseas and served in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines, receiving his first lieutenant commission while in Italy. He was discharged in 1945, and served in the Army Reserve from 1945 to 1951 and in the National Guard from 1951 to 1964. In 1951, they moved to Spicer. He owned and operated Spicer Transfer Company.
He served on the board of directors for Kandiyohi County Civil Defense and West Central Industries and was on the New London-Spicer School Board. He was past commander of Spicer American Legion where he was a member for more than 60 years. He was a Mason and a member of Spicer Lions, Willmar Noon Kiwanis and Hope Presbyterian Church.
On June 18, 1966, he married Elsie Chapin at Staples. They lived in Spicer until moving to Willmar.
He is survived by his wife; children: Jan (and Darrell) Anderson of Bloomington, Charlotte Chapin of St. Louis Park, Donna (and Carroll) Sarsland of New London, Patsy (and Ray) Parkin of Rapid City, S.D., Charles (and Annastasia) Chapin of Willmar, Karen (and Lloyd) Hagemeier of St. Cloud, Steven (and Corrine) Chapin of Waikoloa, Hawaii; a daughter-in-law: Vicky Chapin of Spicer; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; a son, Dean McLaughlin; a stepson, Lenny McLaughlin; and two sisters.
