ATWATER -- Ronald Allen Nelson, 73, of rural Atwater died Tuesday at his home, following a heart attack.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Military honors will be provided by the Samstad-Jensen American Legion Post 375. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Atwater Funeral Home in Atwater and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.
He was born Jan. 19, 1933, in Atwater to Elmer and Verna (Peterson) Nelson. He grew up in Atwater and graduated from Atwater High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

He married Lois Wolter on Oct. 18, 1958. They lived in St. Louis Park and he worked as a service technician at Sears from 1963 until he retired in 1988.
He married Elaine Stradtmann on Jan. 29, 1988. They lived near Atwater. He worked part time for O/M Enterprises Inc., and as a security guard for Pinkerton.
He was a member of the St. Louis Park American Legion, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Atwater Thrashers.
He is survived by his wife; children: Michael Nelson of Atwater, Shelly (and Dean) Wenberg of Plymouth; stepchildren: Gary (and Carmen) Stradtmann of Atwater, Joan Kottke of Glencoe, Scott (and Jody) Stradtmann of Litchfield, Patty (and Ray) Robb of Glencoe, Lisa Wurzberger of St. Cloud, Mark (and Kris) Stradtmann of Glencoe; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Arthur (and Sandy) Nelson of Atwater and Marie Nelson of Kandiyohi.
He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1972; and two brothers.
