GLENWOOD -- Roy William Holmquist, 87, of Glenwood, formerly of Benson, died Sunday at Parkview Court Assisted Living in Glenwood.

The service will be at 3 p.m. today at the All Saint's Chapel at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. A second service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Benson VFW Post 1403 and Willmar American Legion Post 167.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church in Benson and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, the Swift County Benson Hospital Foundation or the Glenwood Retirement Village. Arrangements are by Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.

He was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Lancaster to Alfred and Dora (Lindgren) Holmquist. He grew up in Red River Valley. He graduated in 1938 from high school in Grand Forks, N.D. He graduated in 1942 from the University of North Dakota. He joined U.S. Army ROTC in 1942. He was assigned as a first lieutenant to the 142nd battalion on the European Front during World War II.

He married Jeanette Lee on Feb. 22, 1944, in Grand Forks, N.D. He returned to duty and was seriously wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He graduated with a law degree in 1948 from the University of Minnesota. In 1948, he joined his brother in a law practice in Benson. He was the Swift County attorney from 1950 to 1958. He retired from his law practice in 1989. They wintered for 13 years in Mesa, Ariz. They lived in Chaska for five years. They summered on Lake Minnewaska until 2006, when they moved to Scofield Place in Benson. They moved to Parkview Court in Glenwood in April.

He was a member of the hospital board, church council, Benson Economic Development Corporation and the American Legion Post. He was president at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church where he was also a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He volunteered as a Kiwanian. He was a charter member of the Men's Bridge Club in Benson.

He is survived by his wife; four children: Andrea (and Bob) Carruthers of Atwater, Philip (and Corrine) Holmquist of Omaha, Neb., Mary (and Dan) Lundahl of Victoria and Charles Holmquist of Benson; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother and seven other siblings.
