BENSON -- Rudolf Skalicky, 82, of Starbuck, formerly of Benson, died Friday at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.

The service will be at 2 p.m. today at Zniewski Funeral Home Chapel in Benson.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Vevanovcie, Czechoslovakia, to Frank and Anna Skalicky. He attended eight years of school and then three years at a professional school. He served with the Czechoslovakian Army. He worked with the fire department in Bremen, Germany, during World War II.

He married Berta Vogel on Oct. 12, 1944. He moved to Chesaso in 1944. He moved to Belgium and worked in the coal mines. He trained police dogs for Belgium. They immigrated to the United States in 1957. He worked at foundries and factories in Iowa. They lived in rural Appleton from 1983 to 2000. Berta died in 2000. He moved to Murdock and then to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in 2005.

He is survived by two daughters: Sonja (and Darryl) Neuman of Wyoming, Minn., Sue Miller of Bucyrus, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter: Lida Roiland; and three sisters.
