ATWATER -- Several law enforcement officers responded to a weapons complaint around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Elementary School, 302 Fifth St.

A teacher at the school reported seeing a man with a gun across the street from the school. Officers interviewed a 53-year-old man who denied having a gun, but said he had an air pump and that he had shot squirrels in the past, because they were a nuisance and damaged his roof. He was advised by officers to trap the rodents and not shoot them.

Four sheriff's deputies and a State Patrol officer responded to the call and were on the scene for about one hour and 15 minutes.
