WILLMAR - Many area school districts called it quits early today as a strong winter storm blasts across the region. Some high school sporting competitions and community events have also been postponed.
Willmar Schools closed midday.
The National Weather Service in Chanhassen said 6-8 inches of snow could fall in the Willmar area before the day is over, making travel very difficult.
"It'll come down pretty good," said forecaster James McQuirter. "This is going to be the storm where we'll see almost a half-foot of snow in most areas," he said.
With snow and winds reducing visibility, McQuirter said travel will be "pretty lousy" this afternoon and evening.

Kandiyohi County Public Works Director, Gary Danielson, said plows will be sent out around noon today. As long as plow operators can see they will stay on the roads at least until the evening commute is over. "We want to make sure people get home," he said.
This may not be just a one-day storm. McQuirter said more snow is possible Friday night and Saturday. "We're not totally out of the woods yet."
