HUTCHINSON -- The Hutchinson Tigers scored three times in the middle frame and added an open net goal as time expired to defeat the Willmar Cardinals 4-1 Tuesday in non-conference boys hockey.
After a scoreless first frame, Hutchinson bolted to a 2-0 lead.
With the Cardinals on a 5-on-3 power play, sophomore Joel Schendel snapped back a rebound on Dan Swanson's wrist shot to notch his first varsity goal and get Willmar within one. The Tigers, however, pounced back just 1:44 later to net their third goal of the period and extend their lead to 3-1.
Willmar junior goaltender Kevin Maxfield was kept busy making 33 saves in his first career start.
Hutchinson (2-3) was coming off a 8-0 loss to Class AA top-ranked Holy Angels.
