OWATONNA, Minn. - Voters in southern Minnesota are filling a state Senate seat Republicans have long controlled.
Tuesday's special election will fill the remaining 11 months of Dick Day's term for a seat covering the cities of Waseca, Faribault and Owatonna. Day left the Senate this month to become a lobbyist for racetrack gambling interests.
The three-man race involved Republican nominee and Waseca businessman Mike Parry, Democratic candidate and college professor Jason Engbrecht and Independence Party nominee and Waseca Mayor Roy Srp.
Prominent politicians have campaigned for their party's candidate, including GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Democratic House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher.
Democrats entered the election with a 46-20 majority in the 67-member Senate.
