Six area teams in regionals today, Sunday

Six area amateur baseball teams will be in action this weekend as the Region 9C and 15C playoffs get underway.

Raymond, Willmar, Benson and Appleton are competing in 9C while Norway Lake-Sunburg and New London-Spicer are in 15C. Both regions have six teams fighting for two spots in the Class C State Tournament, which starts Aug. 17 in Miesville and Red Wing.

Raymond will host three games on Saturday before the 9C tournament moves to Wheaton on Sunday for three more games.

Benson (12-7), the Land O' Ducks Teal champion, will meet Land O' Ducks Wood runner-up Clinton (12-4) at 1:30 p.m. to begin Saturday's action.

Willmar (11-11), the Cornbelt South runner-up, and Dumont (21-5), winners of the Land O' Ducks Teal League, follow at 4:30 p.m. while Cornbelt South champion Raymond (27-10) battles Land O' Ducks Teal runner-up Appleton (11-10) at 7:30 p.m.

Regal hosts the 15C tourney with Norway Lake-Sunburg (11-10) facing New Munich Saturday at 10 a.m. St. Martin and Elrosa meet at 12:30 p.m. before New London-Spicer (14-7) and Lake Henry cap the day with a 3 p.m. game. There will also be three games on Sunday.

For the region tournaments, Benson drafted catcher/pitcher Josh Woll-schlager of Madison and pitcher Joe Fuller of Ortonville; Willmar drafted catcher Andy Dollerschell of Bird Island and Sacred Heart pitcher Brandon Wensauer; Raymond drafted catcher/pitcher B.J. Kingery of Atwater and Bird Island pitcher Jesse Bjur; Appleton drafted pitchers Isaac Hansen of Madison and Curt Schake of Ortonville; New London-Spicer drafted pitcher Shane Radermacher of Regal and Paynesville catcher/pitcher Jamie Paul; and Norway Lake-Sunburg drafted Starbuck pitcher Jim Walker and Paynesville catcher Shannon Olmscheid.

Morris pitchers Jeff Wold (Clinton), Chad Christianson (Clinton) and Brock Pashen (Dumont) and catcher Kirby Marquart (Dumont) were also drafted.
