Softball: Waska repels late Paynesville surge

PAYNESVILLE -- Minnewaska pounded out 19 hits, but barely held off a late-inning charge from Paynesville, beating the Bulldogs in West Central North action 13-11 Thursday.

PAYNESVILLE -- Minnewaska pounded out 19 hits, but barely held off a late-inning charge from Paynesville, beating the Bulldogs in West Central North action 13-11 Thursday.

The Lakers (2-0, 3-0) held a comfortable 13-4 lead in the sixth inning before Paynesville (1-2, 3-2) rattled off seven runs. Melanie Mages hit a two-run home run to highlight the rally.

Javen Pauly and Brandi Mithun had three hits each to lead Minnewaska. Laura Tvrdik, Teri Paulzine and Karly Watson had two hits apiece.

Mages, Amanda Skalicky and Carissa Utsch had two hits each for Paynesville.

Paulzine pitched four innings for the win. She allowed three runs on three hits, struck out three and walked two.

Kristin Hegna hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Sting (1-0, 1-1) their first win of the season.

YME came back from a 6-4 deficit in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Molly Kvam tripled to start the eighth for the Sting.

Hegna, who drove in two runs, and Kvam had two hits each. Ashley Vicander picked up the win in relief, pitching 3Xc innings. She allowed one run on two hits, struck out two and walked four.
