WILLMAR - A man accused of assaulting a woman and later threatening a good Samaritan who helped her pleaded guilty Monday to charges in these and two other cases.
Darren Gregory Melges, 45, of Spicer, entered the guilty pleas in Kandiyohi County District Court in Willmar. He pleaded guilty to felony second-degree assault, felony threats of violence, and felony charges of illegal possession of ammunition/firearm, fifth-degree marijuana possession, and storage of methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of a child from separate criminal cases.
Melges was charged with assault for allegedly continuing to strike a woman in a car on Oct. 12 while accusing her of lying about where she had been and with whom. He allegedly grabbed her throat multiple times, once with an extension cord, and squeezing her so she could not breathe. The woman eventually escaped outside with her children, which is where the good Samaritan found her.
Melges was charged with threats of violence aimed at the good Samaritan who came to the aid of the woman and children. According to court documents, the good Samaritan saw a woman with a bloody face and three children alongside the road, and offered them a ride. Melges is accused of chasing them down in his pickup truck, attempting to block them from leaving and yelling expletives.
When the good Samaritan drove back to the area after dropping the woman and children off at a safe place, Melges allegedly again yelled expletives at her.
He was subsequently charged with kidnapping, assault and domestic assault charges for allegedly harming the woman with the children.
Melges was charged with illegal possession of ammunition firearm and drug possession after an officer responded to a hunting complaint Dec. 12 on Sperry Road Northeast in rural Atwater. The officer seized a muzzleloader loaded with black powder with a round in its barrel from the defendant's pickup. The officer also reported seizing prescription medication, marijuana and a pipe that tested positive for methamphetamine from the truck.
Melges was charged with storage of methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of children after a search warrant was executed Oct. 13 at a residence he shared with another person in Spicer. Officers seized a variety of drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine placed in a room where children had access.
