Defending champion John Spreiter of Litchfield is three shots behind leader William Forbrook after the first day of the Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship Monday.
Spreiter, who also won the event in 1996 and 2002, carded a round of 73 at the Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls. Benson native and current Rochester resident Greg Peterson shot a 72 at Rochester Golf & Country Club.
The tournament concludes Wednesday in Rochester.
