WILLMAR -- Motorists in Montevideo will no longer experience delays as resurfacing on state Highway 29 from Chippewa County Road 15 to U.S. Highway 212 wraps up Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced today.
Construction for the project began Oct. 1 and involved removing 4 inches of the existing pavement and replacing it with 4 inches of new pavement, installing pedestrian-accessible ramps and signal revisions.
Crews will return in the spring to permanently install wet-reflective roadway striping when the weather warms up again. Wet-reflective pavement markings include glass beads and ceramic elements that reflect light back toward motorists, which better indicates the location of the marking.
"This innovative striping improves the visibility of pavement markings under less than ideal conditions," said MnDOT Project Engineer Nick Klisch. "It also lasts longer than traditional striping because the markings are ground into the pavement where they are protected from snow plows and other traffic."
Highway 29 was one of three large construction projects in the Montevideo area. Highway 212 from Montevideo to Lac qui Parle County Road 35 completed resurfacing on Sept. 14. The Army Corps of Engineers completed a flood control project on Highway 212 and Chippewa County Road 42 on Oct. 8.
