State swimming and diving meet begins today

Seven Cardinals swim at noon Friday in the prelimaries. Michael McLain, who is in four events, will need his best race in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly to make Saturday's consolation heat.

Junior Kyle Rozendaal is the eighth seed at 57.28 in the 100 backstroke, but it's crowded with another seven swimmers within a about a half second.

Willmar sends all three relays to state.

The medley relay team is seeded at 1:45.30. Ben Fuglestad, Mike Kluver, Reid Olson and Rozendaal has a shot at the consolation heat but there are 11 seeds under 1:45.

The 200 freestyle relay seeding shows nine quartets under 1:33, The Cardinal foursome of Fuglestad, Kluver, McLain and Ross Swartz goes in at 1:33.27.

Willmar's 400 freestyle relay team of Nick Aaker, McLain, Rozendaal and Swartz is in the 3:25 range along with seven others. There are 10 units under 3:25.

Consolation and championship heats go off starting at noon Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Tim Walker, a senior on the Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield team, is defending champion in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Stefan Lemke, a Minnewaska/Morris senior, returns looking to add to his state medal collection. He was third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle last year.

Walker has the second-best seed time in the 50 at 21.73 and is third in the 100 at 48.20.
