State troopers urge drivers to 'move over'

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota State Patrol announced Thursday that since Jan. 21 six state troopers have been hit by vehicles while performing emergency enforcement duties along state roadways.

The announcement was made as part of an effort to urge Minnesota motorists to use caution around emergency vehicles performing duties along roadways. Minnesota's "Move Over" law requires drivers to move at least one lane away from emergency vehicles with emergency lights activated. Drivers unable to move to another lane must slow down, or face a possible citation.

The "Move Over" law was created after State Patrol Cpl. Ted Foss was killed in 2000 while making a traffic stop along Interstate 90. Last year, troopers issued more than 400 citations and 1,300 warning for violations of the "Move Over" law.
