BROOTEN -- The Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded Tuesday afternoon to a fatal accident involving a train and semi on state Highway 55, a half mile east of Brooten.
The driver of the semi, a 59-year-old male, was transported from the scene by Brooten Ambulance to Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood where he was later pronounced dead. His name is being withheld.
According to a Sheriff's Office report, an eastbound train traveling 45 to 50 mph collided at 1:25 p.m. with a semi and trailer at the entrance of a West Central Inc. fertilizer plant while the semi was leaving the facility.
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted on the scene by the Belgrade Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
