The National Weather Service is forecasting the first winter storm of the season.
According to the winter storm watch statement from the Chanhassen office of the Weather Service, a powerful low pressure system will move across the Upper Midwest this weekend, bringing significant wintry weather to the state.
Snow is expected to begin Saturday morning and become heavy across central and south central Minnesota Saturday afternoon and early evening. A period of sleet or freezing rain is expected in the southern part of the state.
Snow accumulations exceeding 6 inches are possible across much of central and south central Minnesota, according to the Weather Service. Strong winds are likely, making travel even more dangerous. The storm watch issued Thursday afternoon is in effect from Saturday morning to late Saturday night. A watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice that may impact travel.
