SUNBURG -- Volunteer firefighters in Sunburg were able Friday to confine a fire to an exterior deck-style porch of a home in an early morning blaze.

Fire Chief Milt Tollefson said the blaze was spotted by a neighbor living across from the home. He was able to contact firefighters and wake the resident in time to prevent greater damage or a tragedy.

The fire at the Janine Anderson residence, located on County Road 1 near Minnesota Highway 9, was discoveredat 4:38 a.m. by Kelly Syverson.

The blaze destroyed the porch and damaged siding and a roof overhang. There was also some smoke in the home, but no fire damage inside the home, Tollefson reported.

The fire is believed to have been ignited by hot ashes from a corn stove. The corn burner stove had been cleaned out on Thursday evening, and a bucket holding the hot ashes had been placed on the porch, the chief said.
