BENSON -- Swift County and the city of Benson have completed the sale of a parcel of land next to the Fibrominn plant in Benson to North American Fertilizer LLC.
At a special meeting Monday morning, the Swift County Board agreed to sell 9.67 acres of county-owned land to Benson. The city, in turn, approved a resolution during its Monday evening meeting to sell the same property to North American Fertilizer. The price in both sales was $106,370.
The County Board was following the recommendation of the county and city attorneys, according to Swift County Board Chair John Baker.
The board called Monday's special meeting after the county discovered it had not followed statutory requirements for the sale of the land. The process completed Monday is an appropriate way to complete the sale and meet the state guidelines, according to Glen Pederson, director of finance for Benson.
In July, the County Board approved selling the parcel next to the Fibrominn plant to North American, which plans to build a $5 million operation next to the power plant, which will burn turkey litter. North American will recondition ash from the power plant into agricultural fertilizer and sell it to area agronomy dealers.

With the Fibrominn plant coming online later this year, the city recognized the need to expedite the sale to North American, Pederson said.
Also on Monday, the Benson City Council approved co-signing an operating loan for a Benson Golf Club in the amount of $100,000 and approved a $10,000 cash donation to the club.
The 18-hole golf course had several unexpected capital outlay projects this year, including the replacement of the water pump for the course's irrigation system.
The club also received $6,000 less than expected in membership fees, Pederson said.
