BENSON -- A three-year struggle to get a proper heating system working in a Swift County building has been resolved.
The commissioners agreed this week to purchase an overhead heater, costing $10,975, and install it at its satellite shop in Murdock.
Ever since the building was constructed three years ago, the heating system has not worked properly, said Auditor Byron Giese. It was discovered that a segment of the in-floor heating panels had not been installed.
The general contractor, Piotter Construction of Appleton, and the electrical contractor, Loen Electric from Benson, made numerous attempts to remedy the problem, said Giese, but problems persisted.
He said spending the money to install a different system was cheaper than hiring an attorney and going to court.

Also this week, a request for Swift County to share its full-time veteran service officer with Lac qui Parle County was turned down.
Giese said their veteran service officer, Dave Barrett, recently returned from deployment and the county is enjoying having its full-time officer back. The county is not interested in sharing the position with another county.
In personnel matters, the County Board of Commissioners approved a recommendation Tuesday from Highway Engineer Andy Sander to terminate the county's longtime general foreman because of insubordination. James Molden had worked for the county for 34 years.
