MONTEVIDEO -- Sylvia Ann Josephine Lanning, 88, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Montevideo, died March 14 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo. Burial will be at Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 6, 1917, in rural Montevideo to George and Clarice Tubbs. She grew up on the farm and attended rural school at District 33 in Rosewood Township, Chippewa County. She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1936 and attended American Business College in Minneapolis for six months. She returned to Montevideo and worked at the American Agriculture Association for three years.

She married Theodore Lanning on July 20, 1940, in Sibley, Iowa. They moved to Clara City in 1944. She worked as a secretary at Immanuel Lutheran Church for four years and the Willmar State Hospital for two years. She was secretary for the Republican State Chairman Gordon Yock and his personal secretary at Variety Supply Company for 18 years. She was the first full-time city clerk for Clara City. They retired in 1974 and wintered at Paradise Park in Harlingen, Texas. She worked as a secretary clerk at Paradise Park from 1986 to 1996. She moved to Kanesville Heights Senior Housing in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 2004.
She is survived by her children: Denise (and Larry) Finger of Smithville, Mo., Clifford (and Shari) Lanning of Sandpoint, Idaho, Marlys (and Bill) Willard of McClelland, Iowa; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two siblings: Meg (and Harold) Lundin of Edina and Dennis (and Luella) Tubbs of Turlock, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers and one sister.
