WILLMAR -- Two juveniles made their first court appearance Monday on felony charges of third-degree assault for their alleged roles in an incident that left a 17-year-old boy with a broken nose.
Sergio Jesus Trevino Jr., 16, of Willmar, and Zachariah Xavier Reuben Dethlefs, 17, of Raymond, were both ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim or to socialize with each other. Dethlefs' next appearance in Kandiyohi County District Court is Jan. 11. Trevino's next appearance is Jan. 26.
Felony charges against 16- and 17-year-old juveniles are public record.
According to the petitions against the boys, Willmar police were called around 9:30 p.m. Nov. 1 to Rice Memorial Hospital about an assault. Officers observed a 17-year-old boy there with blood on his face and hands. His nose was also deviated and his face swollen.
The boy said that Dethlefs called him and asked him to hang out before driving him to a northwest Willmar address. Once there, he said Trevino proceeded to beat him up. He said he had left his phone in Trevino's vehicle and that Trevino had used it. They had exchanged words earlier about the phone.

An officer attempted to talk to Dethlefs about the assault, but was told by a relative that he did not want to "squeal" even though he had witnessed the incident. Trevino was interviewed and said the boy had taken him to the ground and attempted to punch him before Trevino hit him.
The boy suffered a broken nose and an eye laceration.
