INDEPENDENCE — The Minnesota Department of Transportation started construction on a $22 million U.S. Highway 12 safety improvement project.
Started on May 18, the project is scheduled through Sept. 17 and will affect motorists traveling Highway 12 between County Road 6 and County Road 92 will consist of three separate projects in Hennepin County, according to a news release from MnDOT.
At Highway 12 and County Road 90 in Independence, MnDOT will construct a roundabout to greatly reduce severe crashes and make it easier for traffic to turn onto and from County Road 90.
On Highway 12 from County Road 6 to Baker Park Road in Maple Plain, MnDOT will reconstruct Highway 12 to install a center concrete barrier to eliminate head-on crashes within this section.
At Highway 12 and County Road 92 in Independence, Hennepin County will lead a project in partnership with MnDOT to install a roundabout for traffic entering and exiting Highway 12 from County Road 92 and realign County Road 92 with a bridge over Highway 12. This section of the project will continue into 2022.
