FARGO -- A child is hospitalized at Sanford Children’s Hospital here after being run over by a trailer in a parade in central Minnesota’s Wadena County.

The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, on Highway 87 near Juniper Avenue in Menahga, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The patrol said a pickup, driven by 24-year-old Ben Skoog of Menahga, was towing a boom trailer as part of the parade on the highway, also known as Main Street, and had stopped while children were picking up candy near the vehicle.

The pickup began moving again when a passenger in the truck, 17-year-old Robert Pietila of Menahga, saw a child under the rear tire of the trailer.

The vehicle backed up off the child and emergency responders were immediately on the scene.

The injured child, 7-year-old Brett Pietila of Menahga, was flown by Sanford Health AirMed to Sanford Children’s in Fargo.

The patrol described the boy’s injuries as being not life-threatening. Sanford Children’s confirmed Pietila is a patient there, but said the family did not want his condition released.

The parade was held as part of the Menahga Midsummer Celebration 2017, according to the city of Menahga website.

Menahga Police and Fire Department and Wadena County Sheriff's Department assisted in the accident response.
