Tuesday snowfall starts adding up, reports of up to 8 inches in region

Snow started early Tuesday in central Minnesota with heavy snow moving northeast to the Duluth area.
The National Weather Service reported 5 inches of snow had fallen at Carlos, near Alexandria in Douglas County, by 7:12 a.m. Tuesday, with weather warnings continuing into today.
By evening in western Minnesota, there was a report of 8 inches of snow at Murdock and 7 inches at Benson, both in Swift County, and 6.2 inches at Milan in Chippewa County. Three inches of snow was reported before noon Tuesday at Montevideo. The Willmar report was 3.9 inches Tuesday evening.
South of Villard in Pope County, there was a report of 5.8 inches of snow by midafternoon, according to the National Weather Service. And in Meeker County, there was 3 inches was reported in Litchfield by midafternoon, and 6 inches at Eden Valley by Tuesday night.
Snowfall totals from 6 to 10 inches were expected along a narrow line from Lake Mille Lacs through southern Carlton and northern Pine Counties in northeast Minnesota and into northwestern Wisconsin.
Northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph were expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, along with the chance for some lake-enhanced snow totals in the higher terrain along Lake Superior.
The snowfall could push the season total for Duluth to near 100 inches.
The late winter storm contributed to multiple crashes on Interstate 94 on Tuesday morning, forcing the eastbound lanes to close in the St. Cloud area.
Snow was hitting the Twin Cities during Tuesday’s evening commute with 3 to 6 inches expected to accumulate overnight in the metro area and counties to the south and east.
