Two Willmar officers assaulted at arrest scene; three arrests made

WILLMAR -- Two Willmar Police Department officers suffered minor injuries after being assaulted Saturday night at the scene of an arrest on the east side of Willmar.

WILLMAR -- Two Willmar Police Department officers suffered minor injuries after being assaulted Saturday night at the scene of an arrest on the east side of Willmar.

Three suspects -- two males aged 18 and 15 and a female, age 17 -- face charges in connection with the incident.

Police responded at 10:45 p.m. Saturday to the area of Becker Avenue Southeast and Charlotte Street, where a caller reported that a group of people were trying to get someone off the ground.

Authorities said officers located the individuals in the 900 block of Becker Avenue Southeast. Two of the suspects immediately fled on foot and were apprehended nearby. According to a police report of the incident, officers were talking to one of the suspects when a third person suddenly approached and assaulted one of the police officers. After a brief struggle, the third suspect was taken into custody.

One of the suspects was found to be severely intoxicated, and a Willmar Ambulance was dispatched to the scene. As the suspect was being loaded into the ambulance, he assaulted another police officer, the report said.

One of the police officers was treated at Rice Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and released. The second officer did not require treatment.

An 18-year-old male suspect is being held at the Kandiyohi County Jail. He faces charges that include underage consumption, fleeing a police officer on foot and obstructing the legal process with force.

The 15-year-old male faces charges of fourth-degree assault of a police officer, fleeing a police officer on foot, underage consumption, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct. He is being held at the Prairie Lakes Detention Center.

The 17-year-old female suspect is being held at the Prairie Lakes Detention Center. She faces charges of fourth-degree assault of a police officer, fleeing a police officer on foot, underage consumption, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Willmar police were assisted at the scene by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol and Willmar Ambulance Service.
