Unbelted teenager from Starbuck dies in Pope County crash

GLENWOOD — An 18-year-old man from Starbuck was killed Sunday when he was ejected from his vehicle following a head-on collision with a semitractor-trailer on Pope County Road 18.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Josiah Michael Wright, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The crash occurred around 12:42 p.m. Sunday on County Road 18, just west of Highway 104, south of Glenwood.

The accident report said Wright, driving a 2007 Pontiac G6, was headed westbound on County Road 18. The Pontiac crossed the center line and hit an eastbound 2019 Kenworth head-on. The semi was driven by Steven Robert Nelson, 35, of Paynesville.

Nelson suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital in Paynesville. The State Patrol said he was not wearing a seat belt either.

Roads were dry and alcohol was not involved, according to the report.
